Dissolved CO2 in groundwater is frequently supersaturated relative to its equilibrium with atmospheric partial pressure and will degas when it is conveyed to the surface. Estimates of dissolved CO2 concentrations can vary widely between different hydrochemical facies because they have different sources of error (e.g., rapid degassing, low alkalinity, non-carbonate alkalinity). We sampled 60 natural spring and mine waters using a beverage industry carbonation meter, which measures dissolved CO2 based on temperature and pressure changes as the sample volume is expanded. Using a modified field protocol, the meter was found to be highly accurate in the range 0.2–35 mM CO2. The meter provided rapid, accurate and precise measurements of dissolved CO2 in natural waters for a range of hydrochemical facies. Dissolved CO2 concentrations measured in the field with the carbonation meter were similar to CO2 determined using the pH-alkalinity approach, but provided immediate results and avoided errors from alkalinity and pH determination. The portability and ease of use of the carbonation meter in the field made it well-suited to sampling in difficult terrain. The carbonation meter has proven useful in the study of aquatic systems where CO2 degassing drives geochemical changes that result in surficial mineral precipitation and deposition, such as tufa, travertine and mine drainage deposits. 2012 Elsevier B.V. The level of carbonation of a sugar-sweetened beverage preload affects satiety and short-term energy and food intakes.

The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with increased incidence of overweight and obesity, and a factor underlying this putative link could be the relatively low levels of satiety that may be induced by these beverages. Although many sugar-sweetened beverages are carbonated, little attention has been given to the potential effects of level of carbonation on satiety and subse...

Gustatory, Olfactory and Trigeminal Interactions in a Model Carbonated Beverage

Flavour results from the integration of aroma, taste and chemosensory information within the brain. Understanding interactions between the anatomically separate systems which relay this information is crucial to our appreciation of how different aspects of food contribute to flavour perception and the formulation of successful products. To examine these interactions, a beverage system was creat...

Effect of heat pretreatment/recarbonation in the Ca-looping

7 Even though an increasing number of pilot-scale plants are demonstrating the potential ef8 ficiency of the Ca-looping technology to capture CO2 at a commercial level, a still standing 9 matter of concern is the loss of carbonation reactivity of the regenerated CaO by calcination, 10 which is expected to be particularly marked at realistic conditions necessarily implying a high 11 CO2 partial ...

Effects of Crack and Climate Change on Service Life of Concrete Subjected to Carbonation

Carbonation is among the primary reasons for the initiation of the corrosion of steel rebar in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Due to structural loading effects and environmental actions, inevitable cracks have frequently occurred in concrete structures since the early ages. Additionally, climate change, which entails increases in CO2 concentration and environmental temperature, will also ...
